TISL Day at the Legislature

Legislative Preview 2012

New leaders in the legislative and executive branches are hitting their strides one year into their terms, and Capitol Hill could be very busy for CCC.

Gov. Bill Haslam says he'll be more proactive with the Legislature this year, and he'll have a more ambitious legislative package.

Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey and House Speaker Beth Harwell have set a goal of a short session, which they optimistically hope might end by May. For certain, the session is starting earlier because there's neither an organizational session nor a gubernatorial inauguaration, as there were last year.

Consequently, April promises to be the peak of the legislative session. Substantive bills will be on calendars.

The state budget is always the overarching and underlying issue. Revenues are up, but leaders say pre-programmed expense increases will take most of the difference.

Official schedules for the week are posted on the Legislature's web site on the preceding Friday.

Attire

We recommend a coat and tie for men and business professional attire for women.

Lunch

You'll be on your own for lunch. A wide variety of low-cost options is within walking distance of the Capitol.
